So this weeks been rough. While waiting at the garage for a simple oil change and brake change, a migraine set in then i was told i needed extra parts what would cost me $2,100 for a 10 year old vehicle. Given that it is our only vehicle, and our Son plays travel baseball for an elite team out of town, it was sort of non negotiable. Luckily they said it would take less than an hour more so I’d have plenty of time to pick my Son up from school.
3.5 hours later, the migraine is still going strong, school is basically over and I’m still stuck at the garage. I set up having the kiddo walk next door to his tutor’s, giving me an extra hour to wait for my vehicle at the garage.
It is now 4:30pm, but the vehicle is still not done and i am now being told it won’t be ready until tomorrow, I am half an hour away from my kiddos school, my spouse is out of town for work for the next three days, I now have no vehicle and this headache is making it impossible to comprehend anything. Luckily my mom, who i never call since she is usually busy can actually pick me up, pick my kiddo up and bring us home!!!! Thank you, whoever you believe in lol
Get home with the kid, our automatic gate is closed so we’ll have to walk up our super long driveway, its freezing outside, I need to pee but whatever, I have my boy and we are home!!!!! with one issue…. I forgot my house key on my car keys and the garage/mechanic’s is now closed.
No problem, i planned for this. I left our mudroom door unlocked inside our locked garage in case the kid came home on the bus, BUT apparently I went into autopilot mode when leaving and locked it and I know with 100% certainty that my obsession to lock doors also trickles into locking windows …. not one of them was unlocked. Not one!!!
I checked for the spare key we left for the contractors but it was gone. One of them must have forgot to put it back when they were done a job (I’ll be changing my locks asap). I also reinforced all of my doors about two months ago with 3.5″ screws, incase i wanted to get really crazy and attempt to kick in a door, it wasn’t going to happen.
All i wanted to do, so desperately, is go inside, actually use a functioning bathroom and handle this migraine that made me feel like my eyes were bleeding.
Our only option now to get into the house was to bust a window…. a brand new window. I couldn’t create that type of chaos to replace it for a 14 hour wait when the garage opens back up.
So we started to think of where we could sleep for the night. Long story short, don’t get into this predicament. It could have so easily been avoided and in our case, it will not happen again.
After getting the kid off to school, very poorly i may add (forgot his water and extra snacks since its a hot lunch day today), I got started on moving our keyless entry lock from the garage to the mudroom.
We have the Weiser Halo which we completely gave up on and forgot sort of forgot about because the batteries die so quickly. I changed it locations, added new batteries, and will be setting it up to notify me when the batteries get low (if i can even do that).
Now that the problem is temporarily fixed, I am researching new locks that will be more reliable, where the batteries wont die within a month and get locked out again. Once I get our vehicle back, I’ll be heading to town to make copies of our keys as an extra precaution.
Here is what I found to be the best option for keyless entry to your home:
